Ludwig II,

a Bavarian Myth

Life & Castles

Ludwig was born on August 25th 1845, the feast of Saint Louis and also the birthday and feast day of his grandfather Ludwig I, in Nymphenburg Castle, and after his adolescence, often spent away from Munich, in the summer residence of Hohenschwangau, next to the most famous Neuschwanstein. He ascended the throne, barely eighteen, in 1864.

Between 1868 and 1886 three castles were built by King Ludwig and other projects only imagined but never carried out. The deep understanding with his cousin Sissi, his friendship with Wagner: are a few points of interest concerning King Ludwig II. He is the most famous sovereign among bavarian Kings, a myth of Decadentism and indeed the most known, loved, and controversial son of Bavaria.
